{"id":680,"date":"2010-10-02T04:00:48","date_gmt":"2010-10-02T08:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/joeclarksblog.wordpress.com\/?p=680"},"modified":"2010-10-02T04:00:48","modified_gmt":"2010-10-02T08:00:48","slug":"cats-friends-and-growing-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joeclarksblog.com\/?p=680","title":{"rendered":"Cats, Friends, and Growing Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My friend, Bill, lost his cat, Mr. Mouse, of 19 1\/2 years.\u00a0 That\u2019s a long time for a cat.\u00a0 It is a long time for any kind of an animal.\u00a0 It is especially hard losing a good and faithful companion who has been with you for so long.\u00a0 Our sympathies, Bill.<\/p>\n<p>As I reflected on what Bill may be going through, I thought of our \u201cSpike.\u201d\u00a0 Ardy had acquired the cat about 17 years ago, and I came to know Spike after we started dating.\u00a0 After we married, somehow Spike became \u201cmy\u201d cat.<\/p>\n<p>Some guys don\u2019t like cats.\u00a0 I have always liked all kinds of animals, so I was one of those guys who liked cats.\u00a0 And Spike turned out to be a great companion.\u00a0 He would keep me company during the long, lonely hours I would spend writing and one of the things he enjoyed most was sitting between Ardis and me while we watched television.\u00a0 He was particularly fond of watching the Florida Gators play ball.<\/p>\n<p>As he aged, we faced what all people possessed by pets faced; we had to make the decision of being selfish and keeping Spike around, or we had to face the reality of allowing him to leave our lives with dignity, even though we were not ready to lose him.<\/p>\n<p>It was best for the cat.<\/p>\n<p>It was hard for us.<\/p>\n<p>And then I thought back to one of the days I consider to be the worst in my life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I was in Guantanamo and it was the Fourth of July weekend.\u00a0 My friend Denny, assigned to the USS Kennedy, was ashore on the beach detachment from the boat.\u00a0 When I saw him on the ramp, I was happy to see him.\u00a0 I had not seen him for more than three years, not since Aviation Indoc at Pensacola.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After Denny and I greeted each other, we started catching up on other mutual friends.\u00a0 We stood on the ramp in the hot Cuban sun when all of a sudden, he asked, \u201cDid you hear about Phred?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just the way he said it, I knew Phred was dead.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The loss I felt was overwhelming.\u00a0 I got the details &#8211; it was a cold catapult\u00a0shot\u00a0and Phred was the only fatality of the four aboard the EA-6.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Right after this news, we had mail call at the squadron and I had some letters from home.\u00a0 After I finished up my day at the squadron, I headed back to the BOQ with my mail.\u00a0 The letters from home would at least cheer me.<\/p>\n<p>Not so fast, Buckaroo&#8230;\u00a0 When I began reading my mom\u2019s letter, she opened with the sad news she had to put her cat, my cat, George, down.\u00a0 George was 18 years old and he was a good cat.<\/p>\n<p>First the news of Phred, now George.\u00a0 This was not at all a very good Fourth of July.\u00a0 The loss of a pet pales against the loss of a friend or family member.<\/p>\n<p>But, as the clich\u00e9 says, life goes on.<\/p>\n<p>Phred, whose real name was Mike, was a great guy.\u00a0 I think of Mike and all of my other friends who I lost during my years in the Navy every Memorial Day, every Veteran\u2019s Day.\u00a0 I miss them all terribly.<\/p>\n<p><em>Until the next liberty call, shipmates.\u00a0 See you then.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">-30-<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a9 2010 J.
