{"id":2107,"date":"2011-03-10T04:00:05","date_gmt":"2011-03-10T09:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/joeclarksblog.com\/?p=2107"},"modified":"2011-06-24T13:19:07","modified_gmt":"2011-06-24T17:19:07","slug":"fighting-five-takes-the-us-navy-into-the-jet-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joeclarksblog.com\/?p=2107","title":{"rendered":"Fighting FIVE Takes the US Navy into the Jet Age"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_3253\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/joeclarksblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/F9F-2_VF-51_CV-9_1951.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3253\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3253\" title=\"F9F-2_VF-51_CV-9_1951\" src=\"https:\/\/joeclarksblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/F9F-2_VF-51_CV-9_1951-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joeclarksblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/F9F-2_VF-51_CV-9_1951-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/joeclarksblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/F9F-2_VF-51_CV-9_1951.jpg 643w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3253\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">VF-51 Panthers aboard the USS Essex <\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sixty-three years ago today, Fighter Squadron FIVE became the first Navy squadron to land jet fighters aboard an aircraft carrier.\u00a0 On March 10, 1948, they took their brand new North American FJ-1 Fury jets to sea to land aboard the USS <em>Boxer.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The squadron has a very long history in Naval Aviation.\u00a0 Their squadron insignia, a depiction of a screaming eagle is traceable back to 1927 when the Navy first established VF-3S, <em>The Striking Eagles<\/em>.\u00a0 At that time, they flew the Curtis F6C-4 Hawk.<\/p>\n<p>Official activation as a squadron for VF-51 occurred on February 1, 1943 when the Navy designated the squadron as VF-1; they became re-designated as VF-5 later that same year.\u00a0 The squadron finally acquired the designation of VF-51 on August 16, 1948 and remained as VF-51, <em>The Screaming Eagles<\/em>, until retirement in March 1995.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Screaming Eagles<\/em> history includes action in World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam.\u00a0 After acquiring the Fury, the squadron transitioned to the Grumman F9F\u20132 Panther.\u00a0 Again leading the way, VF\u201351 took the Panther into combat for the first time, scoring the first air-to-air kills in the jet age and the first of the Korean War.\u00a0 The ship on which they deployed was the USS <em>Essex. <\/em>\u00a0During the Korean conflict, one of the pilots who would go on to greater fame a decade and a half later was Neil Armstrong.<\/p>\n<p>From the Panther, the next fighter <em>The Eagles<\/em> would transition into was the last of the true gunfighters, the F-8 Crusader.\u00a0 Again proving their leadership among all the fighter squadrons of all the fleets, the pilots of <em>The Screaming Eagles<\/em> took on the task of evaluating the Crusader\u2019s air-to-ground capabilities.\u00a0 Flying from the deck of the USS <em>Ticonderoga<\/em>, the warriors of VF-51 again proved themselves well in combat during the Vietnam conflict.\u00a0 According to the squadron history, because of their excellence in performing the evaluations, the Navy selected VF-51 to fly secret missions into Laos.\u00a0 During this time, the squadron shot down two Mig-21s while flying the Crusader.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3254\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/joeclarksblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/F-4B_VF-51_CVA-43.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3254\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3254\" title=\"F-4B_VF-51_CVA-43\" src=\"https:\/\/joeclarksblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/F-4B_VF-51_CVA-43-300x196.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joeclarksblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/F-4B_VF-51_CVA-43-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/joeclarksblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/F-4B_VF-51_CVA-43.jpg 879w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3254\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">VF-51 F-4B Phantom<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Returning home from the war for a short time, the men of the squadron transitioned from the Crusader to the new McDonnell-Douglas F-4 Phantom.\u00a0 The squadron completed this transition in time to return to the war aboard the USS <em>Coral Sea<\/em>.\u00a0 While engaged in the last months of the Vietnam War, F-4s flown by <em>Screaming Eagle<\/em> pilots shot down four Mig-17s.<\/p>\n<p>In June 1978, VF-51 traded in their Phantoms for new F-14A Tomcats.\u00a0 One year later, the squadron deployed with their new airplanes aboard the USS <em>Kitty Hawk<\/em>.\u00a0 After two cruises, the squadron moved to the east coast deploying aboard the USS <em>Vinson<\/em>.\u00a0 After returning to the west coast, VF-51 along with VF-111, their sister squadron, took part in the filming of <em>Top Gun<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3256\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/joeclarksblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/F-14_VF-51_intercept_TU-95_Bear.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3256\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3256\" title=\"DN-SC-85-06074\" src=\"https:\/\/joeclarksblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/F-14_VF-51_intercept_TU-95_Bear-300x215.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joeclarksblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/F-14_VF-51_intercept_TU-95_Bear-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/joeclarksblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/F-14_VF-51_intercept_TU-95_Bear-1024x734.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3256\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screaming Eagles intercepting a Soviet Tu-95<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Originally, the Navy slated VF-51 and VF-111 to transition into the new F-14D Tomcat.\u00a0 However, it was not to be.\u00a0 Plans changed and in March 1995 <em>The Screaming Eagles<\/em> and the <em>Sundowners<\/em> became a part of history.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">-30-<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a9 2011 J.
